You only turn 100 Once

So this is my 100th post. I’m not going to make a big deal of it, but I felt the need to acknowledge it.

So with that out of the way, let’s talk about Steven Meisel. He has a pretty impressive track record, if you’re impressed by things like shooting every cover of Vogue Italia since 1988. And doing what can only be described as SHIT loads of advertising campaigns and editorials out the wazoo. And given that such things impress me greatly, I want the world to know that I love Steven Meisel.

Every.Single.Cover.    Since 1988.

Every SINGLE cover, for twenty two years.

When you think about how many photographers would kill to get the cover of Vogue, to have more than 300 of the things is really a monumental achievement. And that’s just Vogue Italia. There’s actually a book of them, if you are so inclined…

Instead of getting jaded or repetitive, Meisel always finds fresh ways to see things and is constantly coming up with amazing images. His advertising work is as regular as his editorial stuff, and of the same amazing quality. His is the kind of campaign that makes you buy magazines FOR the ads.

So what else?

Oh yea, he’s responsible for THAT grunge shoot in Vogue the ’90′s that made the look huge back then, so in a way he’s kind of responsible for the revival we’re having now. And I know, I know that Kurt and underground, and music and blah blah blah, but Meisel’s shoot brought the aesthetic to the clothes buying mainstream, so he IS responsible (along with the stylist), alright?! Interestingly, his work is often a lot sexier and elegant than that shoot, which was quite naive and fresh, even with the massive boots and plum lipstick. But again with the versatility and general deadly.

His work also sometimes a little bit reminds me of Guy Bourdin’s colour. He has supreme control over it, making his images striking and captivating. But you can gush over him for yourselves, here comes the good stuff….

My Knight in Shining Armour….

I really wanted to do a post on Nick Knight and his general awesomeness for a while but I don’t know where to start. He is constantly pushing boundaries in fashion imagery, always embracing new technologies and processes. His award winning website, showstudio.com features a whole bunch of amazing films and images and visual treats. I love the way he embraces digital manipulation in the creation of fashion imagery, in a way that adds to the image rather than just for the sake of it. I love that his work can be really weird. I love the movement in his images. And if it’s not enough that I love him, he was asked to do the WHOLE of the i-D’s recent 30th birthday issue. As in, he took every image in the entire bumper magazine. And they are spectacular images. Here are a bunch of other awesome Nick Knight images, including one of my favourite campaigns of his (the Dior kungfu crazy one) and one of my favourite editorials (British Vogue April 03 – it’s actually inspired me and my aesthetic more than I sometime realise!). Enjoy!

Gimme some (head) space

The other day I noticed something that has been bothering me since. There is no clean white wall in my living space. In my whole house there isn’t one wall that is without a bookshelf or picture or radiator or some piece of furniture shoved against it or some other thing. I think what’s really bothering me about it is that it’s not cluttered enough to be pleasing to the eye, nor is it clean enough to be calming. It’s a terrible in between house, which is my least favourite and makes me feel a bit sick.

And while I do adore floor to ceiling bookshelves, and walls that are jam packed with pictures & mirrors, right now I am craving a white wall. With nothing, not even a skirting board on it. (Actually, what’s the story with skirting boards??!!). Just like minimal in one part of the house, one space to breathe, and then the rest can be as cluttered as anything. I’m not going to go on about interiors loads, coz it’s not my thing, that has just been annoying me. To bring it back to what I know, it’s like every so often, feeling the need to wear no colour. It’s always the days you are a bit distracted and need to focus, or when you have to really concentrate on something. Colour and pattern can be (no, scratch that, they ARE) distracting, in living spaces and on your body. Sometimes you just need a neutral block colour to give your eyes a break.

Jesus Christ, Tom Ford.

Tom Ford is a ride of a man. A ridey Ridey Mc Riderson. Not only is he pretty hot for an almost 50 year old, but he has a singular, driven talent that is even sexier than his clothes. His (design) prowess is overwhelming, almost god like (Have you seen a Single Man? Just watch it. His attention to detail is scary). I remember being really confused when he decided to stop designing womenswear. Fair enough, he had a big fight with Gucci & their holding group Pinault-Printemps-Redoute, but I just couldn’t understand why someone so successful and crazy talented would want to totally stop, like proper cease & desist, it would be like….actually, I don’t have a good enough analogy. It’s just really dramatic.

Anyway, it seems like he misses us as much as we miss him, because this coming season he is FINALLY returning to womenswear. *HA!!! Like he misses the people who don’t buy his clothes….* And he’s keeping us all waiting until spring is sprung until he shows us what he’s got on offer. I would really like you to READ THIS ARTICLE, for two reasons. One, it has sneak peek preview pictures of the new Tom Ford Spring Summer 2011 womenswear collection (sorry I just enjoy saying that!). Which are effing amazing. Also, Tom (sorry, Mr. Ford) explains just why he is keeping everything so hush hush. It’s really interesting, and is pause for thought in the madness that is fashion seasons. Oh, and if you are in the mood for picking up French Vogue, now’s a good time, as La Ford is guest editor of the December issue. As you do. Did I mention he still has the sunglasses, menswear and perfume lines, as well as a new make up range (i’l have to do another post on that, his packaging and perfumes are my favourites!)? Oh, and a new film in the making. As you do. This man clearly hates sleeping.

I was browsing some old Vogue’s recently and came across this article, and I thought I would share it with you.

I Heart Mario

Now, I know everyone always says that they have been reading Vogue since they were in nappies, and it’s like yea yea we’re soooo cool coz we’ve been reading fashion magazines forever, big deal. That’s not my point. The point is this – even though I don’t remember a time BV (before Vogue, obvs), I can really vividly remember the first photographer who registered in my brain. The first time I noticed the particular saturation of colour, the composition, the pose of the model, the light being different to other images and recognisable as his work. Basically the first time I GOT Vogue, and the art of fashion photography. That man? Mario Testino, naturally.

Mario Testino’s world is a place I want to live. It is hi-colour, hi-glamour, and super sexy. He’s the poster boy for glossy fashion photography. He is a notoriously lovely person, a personality in his own right. Mind you, if I had his talent and his friends (the most beautiful of beautiful people) and his life in general (yachts and lots of sunny weather), I’d probably be pretty happy too.  Not that he’s just all sweedie-dahling bluster, because he has clearly busted his ass to get as good as he is. And while over the years i have expanded my knowledge and found new favourites to love, Mario is the reason that I really love fashion and photography, his work opened my eyes. And as they say, you never forget your first.
