Sunday Funday #9…

I have succeeded in getting myself a job where I disseminate the collections and am constantly working with trends and analysing what’s next. Which makes me less inclined to repeat it in my free time. It’s not that I have lost interest – far from it, I am actually living the dream. But all fashion an no play makes Jane a dull, uninspired girl and a very boring blogger. In the spirit of doing something that isn’t fashion (I think it’s called balance??), I watched a load of american teenage-coming-of-age films last weekend. For your convenience I have rated them according to their suitability for hangover viewing.

1) American Graffiti.

If you don’t know it, get on it. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola (him from Apocalypse Now) and written by George Lucas (you know, THAT George Lucas), it’s a coming of age tale set in the late 50′s early ’60′s. It is visually stunning, the music is off the chain (my favourite quote of the film might just be “rock n roll has been going downhill since Buddy Holly died). It’s got drive-ins and drag racing, teddy boys, T-birds and a hop. It’s all a bit Marc Jacobs. And a bit Moschino. If you ask me, it’s better than Rebel Without A Cause with more developed characters and a more engaging story. It’s just a pity Ron Howard is on screen more than the insanely ridey Harrison Ford.
Hangoverability: moderate to low. It’s slick stylish and character centric, so you might lose interest if you are feeling delicate. However even if you’re not following the story it’s very visually pleasing.

2) What’s Eating Gilbert Grape
Johnny Depp being a babe, Juliette Lewis being awesome and Leonardo Di Caprio in what has to be his career defining role. Given that I find touching stories almost always either saccharine or corny, this one just nails it and warmed my icy heart and had me blubbing like a sad kitten. Set in the vast American midlands the whole thing is just unreal.
Hangoverability: Very low. Don’t watch it with a bad hangover/the fear. You might die of tears.

3) 10 things I hate about you
This film is a classic, not least because Heath Ledger is in it, being all Heath ledger-y. It’s over the top, the characters are caricatures, and the story line is silly. Exactly how a teen drama should be. And the clothes are something else.
Hangoverability: high. This film was made with people of low intellects in mind. Perfect hangover fodder.

And I listened to Alt-J. A lot. New favourite. His voice is mesmerising. Sounds a little bit black keys, a little bit bluesy, and very very now.
Hangoverability: high. It’s soothing and melodic. It’s a hug for your delicate ears.

Sunday Funday #8

It is far easier to say you are going to stay in and have a quiet weekend than it actually is to do so. It is thus with a level of smugness and a tinge of FOMO* that I report to have managed a full weekend of quiet civility. Ish. These are some of the things that have been entertaining me this weekend (and week).

1) Postmodernism: Style & Subversion 1970-1990

Love love love the V&A. Love love love late night Friday museum banter. No queues. No tourists. Booze. Awesome. There were costumes worn by Leigh Bowery & Mr. Pearl, Dave Byrne’s giant suit from Stop Making Sense, images by Cindy Sherman & Richard Prince, typography and graphic design from the likes of Peter Saville (Factory Records) and The Face….There was lots of art and product design that I felt was quite dated, but then lots of graphic design that was still really fresh and modern.

What really struck me about the exhibition was how far product design and fine art has come in terms of aesthetic, but how I still feel like we live in a postmodern society. It’s a bit brain melty but very very interesting about where art, and society, is right now.

It also reminded me that I need to watch Blade Runner. And listen to Joy Division more.

2) Dazed & Confused 20th Anniversary Exhibition, Somerset House

If I’m totally honest, I don’t really read Dazed that much anymore. But anything that promises lots of Rankin & Juergen Teller & Nick Knight photos and I’m there. It’s a small but interestingly curated exhibition, well worth a gander. And Somerset House is one of my favourite places. And they have their ice rink & Christmas tree all ready to go….EXCITING!!!! As an exhibition, I was struck by how much of it was really recent, and perhaps a little disappointed that they didn’t have more archival sort of images. I am more interested in the start of Dazed, when it was still a bit more edgy and outsider-y, but that’s just me being a dickhead.

3) Coats

There is definitely something wrong with me. But I am fine with it. Here’s one I customised earlier.

**PICS TO FOLLOW I’M TOO TIRED TO DO AN OUTFIT POST**

4) Patrick Swayze.

Dirty Dancing. POINT BREAK. I wish I could merengue. And surf. And jump out of planes. Well, actually, it was Darrick Doerner who surfed that massive wave at the end. And the whole thing re-ignited my passion for surfing, and I have made a made a pinky swear with my roommate to go on a surf holiday to Cornwall in January!

Here’s Darrick and other big wave surfing legend Laird Hamilton doing they thang at Jaws, one of the best breaks in the world.

5) Modeselektor – Monkeytown

Just what I’m in the mood to listen to. I think you will be too.

6) Breakfast

The only meal worth having. For reals. I also happen to be an EPIC breakfast chef. Which is handy, given my love for them. I mean, who doesnt love eggs?

Sunday Funday #7. On a Wednesday…

Sunday Funday. On a Wednesday. As you do. Here are some miscellaneous things that have put a smile on my face the past week.

*warning: link overload!*

1) Weekends OFF!

For the first time ever I have two joined up days off on a regular basis. This weekend I am going to do fun things like going to an exhibition – Frieze is on but alas, £30 is a bit extreme. I’m thinking more along the lines of popping up to the V&A to see the new permanent photography gallery, as well as the Postmodernism: Style & Subversion exhibition. Or else possibly another favourite, the Design Museum, where they have an exhibition entitled “This is Design”.  Then there’s the slightly more random Imperial War Museum with a collection of war photography from the front line that’s catching my eye – Shaped By War by Don Mc Cullin.

2) Autumn Leaves -

The swishy swishy underfoot. Feel like a kid? Love it? You know it.

3) The Globe, Notting Hill

Fun club/dive/random hole that’s good for reggae and dancehall. Be prepared for them to be a bit “stranger danger” tho, it has a seriously family vibe. As in, there was a wedding party on the last time I was there.

4) Writing things

I have contributed two posts to RTE’s Red Radar (Part of twotube.ie), which are online NOW. GO, READ THEM. It’s me, doing writing, only better, because it’s for someone else. Well, there’s one writing, and then one VLOG, which is super tech-forward of me. I’m so now, right??? Eeeeehhhhhh, more like the hack of me. But nonetheless, it’s there, so have a gander.

Sunday Funday #6

Things are pretty hectic here in Noisy Shoes HQ, trying to sort everything for the BIG MOVE, as well as finish up things I have been threatening to do for months and make dolla (ie retail job :/). Against all odds though, I have managed to squeeze in some fun times. Here are the things that I have been smiling at this week

1) NYFW.

It’s fashion week bitches!! I’m excited! This is the first Fashion Week where I have had an iPhone, so I am delighted with myself keeping up to date with all the collections, as they happen. I am so 2k11. Loving it. Highlights so far have been Prabal Gurung, Alexander Wang (obvs), Lela Rose & Altuzarra. So far next season is looking riiiiiight up my street – print & sporty, streetwear shapes. WIN.

2) MATES!

Had my going away party on Friday in the Bernard Shaw, and it was lovely to have a gathering of friends all in the one place – pity it only seems to happen when someone leaves the country these days….Drinks were drunk and songs were listened to. Like this one, which I have been listening to this week and I love love love it. If you don’t know Pharaohe Monch, get on that shizz. Odd Future have a lot to thank him for, IMO!

3) Shoe Repair

Ok so this is really really lame I know, and I am quite clearly scraping the barrel of fun to even bring it up, but I collected some shoes that needed a bit of love and now it’s like having new shoes, but better almost, it’s like meeting up with old friends. Pretty friends, that make you feel good about yourself. If I had the time I would draw a picture of a shoe with a speech bubble that said “you look really nice today”. They are those kind of shoes. I’l post a pic soon. In the meantime, hopefully I will feel like that about these babies some day.

Alejandro Ingelmo is my new favourite. I am literally obsessed overnight. Along with these babies, at his Milk Studios presentation yesterday he has these other amaaaaaazing sparkly heeled wedge shoe boots that would make you weep they are so pretty. Oh to be there and be happy and longful all at once. Is longful even a word? is now….

Sunday Funday #5

Can’t actually believe it’s Sunday again. This week has FLOWN. Eek.  Sunshine has made me a marginally nicer person tho, which is good. Here’s what got me through the last 7 days.

1) Marley Park

After threatening to go for a walk for the past age with Jules, yesterday we finally made it to Marley Park. And it was sunny. And we got icecreams. And a coffee. All of these things made me very happy. The shaky bridge is gone though, which made me really sad. And then angry, when I found out it was for “health and safety” reasons? What the actual fuck like? Just how stupid have people gotten. Also, they moved a perfectly good playground to where the BMX track used to be, so now there is no BMX track, and a crappy, closed off corner where the old playground was. Great planning there. Was thinking they should put a skate park or something instead of the bunch of rubble. If I was a better person, I would write a strongly worded letter to someone, on behalf of the yoof.

Here is what I wore. Oh yea, we climbed on stuff loads. It was fun.

2) Easter Eggs

Need I say any more? My thighs aren’t so happy about it, but I’m in charge, so chocolate it is ;)

3) Sunshine

So much sunshine. I even got a lil burned the other day. I was a lil lobster. A lil lobster you say? Well, ok then.

Happy (Easter) Sunday, eat chocolate til you vom. Not in an eating disorder way tho.

Sunday Funday #4

It has been a fairly CRAPPY week, but there are only like 5 more and I am FINISHED college. Can’t wait at this stage. So, bear with me while I get through this and I promise I will be a better blogger soon!!!

Here’s what kept me sane this week:

1) Lykke Li

I only realised I liked her yesterday. The reason I figured this out was because I was djing after her gig in Tripod last night, so I went along to see it. She’s a little rocket of deadly. What.a.voice. Really good gig. So, that was nice. Turns out I know loads of her music too, just from listening to the radio in a really passive way. I’d love to know how many bands I know without knowing their names. Hmmmmm, I smell a summer challenge in there somewhere…….

Bob’s Burgers

Check it out on 4od. it’s wonderfully weird.

Bob's Burgers

3) Comfortable Clothes

Looking nice has pretty much gone out of the window, and I have adopted a uniform of shirts and whatever skirt/shorts/jeans are clean/least covered in paint & dye.

Cynthia Rowley Resort 11

Rag & Bone Resort 11

Thakoon Resort 11

Preen Resort 11

Obvs, I look nothing like any of the above, who are infinity more composed/better looking than I. But you get where I’m coming from. Easy, slouch pieces to do deadly work in…..well, that’s the plan, anyway.

4) Coffee, cigarettes, friends.

That is all.

Two mighty big ladies. Aka Sunday Funday #3

I’ve been slowly losing my mind the past few weeks with college work. Yesterday I was faaaar too hungover to post, but today I have been listening to two amazing women that I really just want to share with you. So, Sunday Funday, a day late. Here goes

1) Big Mama Thornton

Ok. So you know Elvis, right? Yea, well basically he, ahem, covered, Big Mama’s lil track, you might have heard it…Hound Dog, it’s called. Without getting all politikal and shizzz, that shit happened LOADS at that time, where the original artist was black and often remained uncredited after a white, “cleaner” (in sound) musician tamed it down and sold it to the masses. Well, anyway, Big Mama has a VOICE. it’s IMMENSE. I really don’t know why she’s not as famous as Aretha, because her music has some serious soul. Perhaps it was just a tad too bluesy. But it just so happens that’s exactly how I like my soul……White girl got the blues…..what of it, right?

2) Big Maybelle.

Like I said, two big ladies. Big Mama, Big Maybelle. Anyhooo. I have already told you about Big Maybelle, as I love her loads. Her brand of soul is more jazzy than Big Mama’s, but her voice is equally epic. Again, I really don’t understand why this amazing woman isn’t more famous, because she undoubtedly deserves it. Although, maybe I am happy that she’s not as big, because so much amazing soul music has been rendered cheesy through overplay, and being used in STUPID FUCKING ADS, and films, and all sorts of wedding dj crap. So, actually, yea, I am really happy she’s still untarnished and pure soul music.

3) Requiem for a dream

I watched this hungover yesterday. BAD MOVE. Jared Leto. Yes. Everything else in the film. No. It is incredible, get under your skin give you horrible nightmares for weeks stuff. I don’t think I’ve been so rattled by a film since A Clockwork Orange. The way it just gets slightly worse and worse, so you are almost lulled into…..BAM!!! foooooooooooooook. It’s intense. Also, why does Jared Leto take roles where they mutilate him? Fight Club? This? And now he’s in a band. Well then.

4) Swapshop

It’s good to get out, even when you are organising the night. I’ve already blogged about the rummage sale, but this is what I bought on the night, an oversize stripey tee. I like it lots.

5) Mates

I would literally be batshit crazy by now if it weren’t for my unbelievable mates. This week got to talk to a few of them that I havn’t spoken to in a while, and that was lovely. So here’s to being finished this degree and hanging out with them again. SILLY PARTY all the way through the summer :)
