Exhibition: Tim Walker

Given that this exhibiton has been open for a month, this is nothing that hasn’t been said before probably a million times and more eloquently and definitely more ebulliently.  However. Tim Walker’s exhibition in Somerset House is a must see in my book because….

He is dead good at colour – pink and blue are his thing. He like totally owns them. Like the way Jeurgen is a bit yellow. Cool colours, cold, dream like and a bit weird.

His use of light is also great. It is his own, and though much copied, rarely equalled. It’s fresh, but stifled. Diffused isn’t the right way of describing it, it’s like a dead sort of floating thing. I guess dreamlike, which is good, because that what he goes for most of the time, like a weird film full of broken dolly models or something. That’s it, his work is cinematic, not just two dimensional, but really visceral and imaginative and evocative. Yeah.

Walker really goes for exaggeration. He likes hammering his point home, making everything larger than life. Scale is for emphasis with him, like block caps “this is really important”. Again with the dreams thing I guess. Sometimes it might be fun if that was possible in real life. Like you know when you are really hungry and you want a MASSIVE sandwich??  But then I guess it would suck if you were really afraid of something and it was gigantic because it was a big deal…hmmmm. Digression aside, his scale plays with his love of fantasy and creating dreamy scenes. And he totally rocks it.
Anyway. He’s great. And the images are great. In fact, the only thing that wasn’t great were the little stickers accompanying the work – they looked so last minute and out of place (the typeface didn’t even match the blurb on the walls – morto). But that’s me being pedantic. Here are some of my favourite bits, snapped on my iPhone.

Photo Story: Bali

Back in February I spent all the money I had on a flight to Bali. It was equal parts inspired and insane behaviour. Sadly, the too-poor-to-eat thing didn’t give me the awesome beach bod I was hoping for, because food that is bad for you is cheaper for you than food that is good for you. But that is a debate for another place (Channel 4 have a good series of documentaries if you are interested). Anyway, me and my not-even-nearly beach ready bod went to Bali and surfed, snorkled and generally acted the maggot. I went fishing at sunset and dived off boats. I absorbed the overwhelming culture, which was Aussie bogan style, and came home thinking it was perfectly acceptable to wear an oversize tie dye tee, leopard maxi, trucker hat and flip flops as a legitimate outfit. :/ Well when the place looks like this, who gives a shit about clothes…

Ps. I accidentally threw out a roll of film with all my favourite places on it. EPIC fail. Thank feic for my iphone….

Photo Story: Une petite histoire Parisienne

I am getting serious mileage out of last weekend’s trip to Paris – me + camera + very blogworthy place = millions of images. Did you know that it takes just 20 minutes to cross the channel on the Eurostar, and that it goes below the sea, as in, under the seabed? They are just some of the things that I discovered. Here are some more…

Paris, Montmarte, Hotel Avenir

museé des art decoratifs, paris

creepy books, paris, shop window

texture, lace, shop front,

trompe l'oeil, musee des arts decoratifs, paris, exhibition, art

skinny legs, paris

architecture, beautiful building, paris, surface

antique shop, curios, paris, vintage

noisy shoes, jane alexandra, paris, self portrait in a toilet

skinny legs, paris, motion, print

antique shop, curios, paris, mish mash, nikon d5000, untouched

…and that’s just the start of it. I’ll give you a pound if you can tell me what that amazing building in the seventh picture is. Not everyone, just the first person.

Brighton Rocks

I told you before I went to Brighton and I was hoping for some nice shots from my Olympus XA. These are they. No filters or Photoshop, just good old fashioned 35mm film photography.

Street Style: The devil is in the detail

More memories from London Fashion Week Fall 2012. As we all know, the devil is in the detail. And they were some devilishly good details. Sorry, that was really poor, even by my standards. The details, by contrast, are of a very high standard. And again, yellow and red seem to be the pervading LFW AW12 street style colours of choice. Go figure.

Attack of the Fasharazzi

This Fashion Week I got papped loads, and it sort of unnerved me. The fact that I do outfit posts on this blog means that I think I have some sense of style, but by the same token, I have always seen myself as the person behind the camera. Also, it is meaningless because everyone got papped loads, DSLRs were the new hot necklace, or so it seemed. It got me thinking…

The fashion paparazzi are a new breed of bloggers and photographers (from hereon in referred to simply as bloggers) that are now part and parcel of the circus that is Fashion Week. They document street style, which feeds back into the fashion machine and informs magazines and media as well as designers and trend forecasting companies, and indirectly affects the way fashion progresses as much as it records fashion the way it is now.

Papping the paps rather than the clothes at fashion week…

This phenomenon did not exist even just a few years ago. And I suppose, in one way it makes sense; fashion week is a hub of stylish people, so of course any blogger with any sense within a commutable distance is going to go and try get some good images for their blog. I know I did. But at what point does the sublime become ridiculous? At what point does the search for an authentic picture become a hoard of buzzy bees with DSLRs creating nothing but internet noise and generally being annoying? When does the fasharazzi become plain old paparazzi?

Paps & vloggers

I honestly don’t know the answer to this question. I can’t really talk either, as I was there, with my DSLR, looking at people and papping the ones I liked. But you sort of have to go and see for yourself to get a feel for the sheer volume of cameras – walking into Somerset House can be so overwhelming, there are literally hundreds of fashionably dressed people sticking cameras in your face, it feels like walking the gauntlet to get to the registration office. And like a mexican wave, as soon as one paps you, another five appear from nowhere and start doing the same. Did they mistake me for someone famous? Did they not know and snap in case I am famous? Or were they just following the crowd, copying others around them? I felt silly and uncomfortable, though I usually obliged because I also think that they aren’t really doing anything wrong – they’re just like me, into fashion and doing they thang on the internet, right?

Well…I dunno. I got the impression there can be a serious lack of editing skills – shoot first, decide whether I like it later – which is a weak way of shooting, and more like papping in my book. But I guess all the blame can’t rest on the bloggers, there was more than enough willing fodder. I got the impression from some people I saw and others I spoke to that the sole reason they got dressed that morning was to turn up on as many blogspots as they possibly could, like they were waiting to be discovered, though even they weren’t sure what they were being discovered for. Which is disingenuous, turning the notion of street style into a charade, where the pappers and the papped are egging each other on, creating images that have less and less to do with authenticity and actual street style. It’s the kind of pretension that makes people hate fashion, and it annoys me because generally speaking the authentic people and the good bloggers are intelligent, lovely and unpretentious, it demeans the good work they do.

This image is the only one I have actually seen – for all the cameras, where do the images go?!

I strongly believe in street style as a valid form of fashion photography and documentary – it records our culture and how we see ourselves. On the other hand, I strongly disagree with the unintended consequence of misguided people thinking they are mini celebrities and prancing around Somerset House with no other motive than getting papped and adding nothing to the fashion conversation. If you are there with a big camera and have nothing to say, you are a tourist. Or a chancer. Simple as.

I think my main problem is that I see so many blogs run by people who claim to want to be fashion journos, and they don’t know the difference between a rolled hem and a french seam, who can’t spot a brogue from a loafer. It’s the reduction of fashion to a mindless, “ooh-look-at-the-pretty-thing” that really gets me in this fashion paparazzi debate. It infuriating seeing people wanting to be the next Tommy Ton, or Scott, or Garance, without putting the time in to actually study what they claim to be so passionate about. It’s the people who don’t know their from there, gushing on about FASHUN, and not stopping for two seconds to form a new idea, a new thought, or to really draw any conclusions from the work that designers put so much effort into producing. It makes a mockery of the system, it debases it, creating a culture that is no better than crass reality tv shows that are built on mediochre wannabes*.

There were about 4 more photographers to my left here

I know I am being somewhat (very) hypocritical here. Who am I to say that people can’t go and participate? But I feel like it is a conversation that needs to be had. Of course bloggers have a very valid place, and as a blogger, I know that it can help to promote a community within fashion and give women a forum for understanding fashion and self-identity at a more grass-roots level, which is appealing and reassuring**. Blogs are community, and are a real force in fashion media today. I suppose my problem is at what point do all the photographers just become like mainstream paparazzi, a nuisance, too much? Or do I just need to chill the hell out? Perhaps I need to take my own advice and realise that there are good bloggers and bad bloggers and they are all entitled to do their thing, and I should just zone the bad ones out. And to never, ever go to Fashion Week with a hangover.

I love this guy, he’s the cutest – saw him everywhere!

*I’m sure reality tv stars are lovely people if you meet them, but lots of people are lovely and have more talent and qualifications to create good tv.

**I did my university thesis on this. And I got a first in it. So trust me, I am both pro-blogger, and know what I am talking about.

John Stezaker, you two faced so-and-so…..

John Stezaker has a really boring first name and a reaaaalllly awesome surname. It’s like steak with a Z. Wow! So I guess it goes some way to explaining his innate understanding of juxtaposition.

I am fascinated by his images, the deconstruction and blatant disregard for faces is sublime subversion. It’s like he wants to use the face but not as a face. Or maybe as a face but just one that you will never fully know or understand, all duplicitous and full of different sides. I think I like that though, it’s a pretty good reflection of people in general – for all the friendly faces out there, there is a forest you will never truly get lurking underneath. Or something along those lines.

i guess i’m already there….

I started thinking about stuff a while back. As a recent immigrant, and I had none. I felt really in-between and all over the place, because my new life was here in London, but all my stuff was “at home”. Which made me a strange form of homesick, where not only did I miss my friends & family, I missed my things. I missed my material life.

and what of it?

It seems very superficial to miss things, but it’s more what the things represent – the memories and stories behind them that make them special. So yea, I missed my stuff. It was amazing being home and stocking up on stuff at Christmas – a bit of family mementos here, some friend photographs there. While it is important to make new friends and new memories, there is something really comforting about having a bit of home in my new space – it makes it an actual home, I feel like I live here properly now. I guess I’m not minimal enough to deal with a bare space. Or rather, I think my room just isn’t nice enough to pull off the whole minimal thing…

probably one of my favourite songs of all time. ever.

Resolutions 2012…aka Back from Hiatus

Hello! Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful NYE and start to 2012. I forgot to bring my digi camera home to Dublin with me so if any of the 35mm evidence develops to be suitable, I may just share mine with you. In the meantime, here are some of my snaps from 2011.

For those of you that noticed (hi mum…), I took a little hiatus there. There was lots going on and the last thing I wanted to do was blog, OK? Jeez. Gimme a break already.

I’m back now though. And hopefully with a little bit more focus. 2011 was good in parts but really really sucky in others so I am pretty much glad it’s behind me. I am looking forward to this year and I plan on embracing it, and just being really really really good at stuff. Ha! I am giddy, as I am going back to London tomorrow after two weeks back home, and I am feeling restless for the big smoke.

So, here are my resolutions for this year. I feel that this is an appropriate thing to share with you because this blog is a resolution that I am still keeping two years on. It’s like my blogging birthday and I’ll do what I want I guess?

1. Get Fit.

I am not a naturally active person. My favourite things are napping and cheese. But I am pretty sure that I need to get up off my hole and take some responsibility for my body, both in terms of health and aesthetics. My friends deserve more from me than the usual wailing “WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY WON’T THIS OR THAT THING LOOOOK GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDDDDDDDD ON ME????? UUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGH I HAVE NOOOOOOOOOOTHING TO WEEEAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR”, etc, ad naseum. Sorry guys. I am going to do some jogging (i believe they pronounce that with a silent J) and some yoga style stretching…and generally be a bit better at being fit. Apparently being fit makes you happier too, but seeing as I have never been fit, I cannot verify this. Will report back later. I have also been toying with the idea of giving up smoking, but let’s be honest here – baby steps.

2. Take more responsibility for stuff

I am really good at letting things happen. And I have been pretty lucky that some really great things have pretty much fallen in my lap. But this year, life, I am coming for you. I wanna own up to my own shortcomings and fix them. Fix the crap out of them. And just push myself and be aware that I am responsible for the stuff that goes bad, as well as the stuff that goes good. And hopefully more good stuff will happen. Like Holidays. And new shoes.

3. Take a sun holiday

It has been YEARS since I have been on a hot sunny beach. I am going to fix that in 2012.

I hope that you have all made resolutions and have wantonly and gleefully broken them already. Well, that or kept them, and are on the path to a better you. Resolutions are important, because they are benchmarks we set for ourselves. Often who we think we want to be turns out to be a pain in the ass – trust me on this, detox Jane is boring as hell, and where’s the fun in that. I like breaking resolutions – blatantly and unashamedly breaking them, sticking two fingers up to self improvement and revelling in the fun of life the way it is. So this year, if you are going to break them (I probably won’t be too far behind you), do it as you do everything else in life – with style ;)

…………..Or with a pair of mouse ears.

Emma Summerton

I forgot to share this with you a while back. Which was really really stoopid of me, because she’s popping up loads at the moment, and we all love that feeling of “I told you so”. So, maybe, “I would have told you so earlier, only I got distracted and forgot?” Not quite the same ring to it. Either way, let’s have a little minute for Emma Summerton.

Kate Moss by Emma Summerton

I first started noticing her images a few years ago in i-D, for whom she works quite regularly. It was one of those things where I would come across an amazing image, and her name would be under it. Over and over, which is always a good sign. Her use of colour is really incredible, it’s kind of like Guy Bourdin mixed with Jeurgen Teller, stripped of Bourdin’s outright sex and Teller’s brash honesty, to produce something really interesting, and uniquely feminine. I feel like these images look like the work of a woman, which is no bad thing, given the dominance of male photographers in fashion. It’s that whole men creating our image buzz that is all deep and meaningful and I’m not really going to get into it now.

There is a sophistication and a softness to her approach that separates her from her male colour maestros. In some ways, there is more than a hint of Cindy Sherman, with a certain detachment permeating the images. Her work is striking but subdued, highly stylised but soft. She does the broken dolly thing in a sophisticated, powerful way – these dollies are anything but weak.

Her work is wonderfully constructed. I feel like it knowingly plays on the idea of The Gaze. It engages me, and makes me want to take more control over my image-making, and be less loosy-goosy-naturalistic-let-the-image-be-organic type thing. Unless I have her all wrong, and really all she wants to do is communicate how much like puppets & slaves we all are for falling victim to fashion. For some reason though, I doubt it.
