Animalism

I used to own a pair of zebra print ponyskin pointed toe kitten heels. It has taken me a while to be able to say that sentence aloud, but I accept it now. In fact, I imagine a point in the near future I will wish I never got rid of them.

A friend of my recently christened me Tiger Force, given my penchant for all things animal print and my endearing (mental) habit of wearing them all at once. I am clearly not the only one though. These are the animal prints I’m crushing on for summer.

When done in a subtle way, animal print is a great non-print, working as a texture to add to an outfit. When done in a not-so-subtle way, animal print cna be the WOW factor. So, I guess, like, it’s quite versatile? So, like, that’s good? And while the cat family has been the animal print du jour for some time now, snake and zebra seem to be making quite the comeback. Snake, when done right, is a great textural print. When done wrong however…..well, I guess there is a fine line between tragedy and comedy…

P.S. Let’s take bets as to how long it’s going to be before cow print pops up on the catwalks again….ss13, anyone? lol…

Pop Up Style Swap!

This Sunday, as part of Dublin Fashion Festival, there is a wonderful Style Swap taking place  in The Grand Social (what used to be Pravda). While the Festival takes its cue from Fashion’s Night Out, offering events and discount around the city’s retailers, hosted by the wonderful stylist Lisa Lu, this Style Swap is a slightly different take. In the words of Lisa herself, “the aim of the event is to breathe new life into unwanted clothes – reclaim them as something new, or set them free to woo another. Make use of what you already have, or pick up something shiny and new from the pop ups by local clothing and accessory designers”.

Lisa is as lovely as she is talented, and has decided to host an evening where the you can bring your tired clothes and relax with cupcakes, live music (as part of Saucy Sundays), make up advice and demonstrations, and best of all Lisa will be on hand to help you look at your wardrobe with fresh eyes, and come up with different ways of wearing what you already own – creating a new look without spending a penny! Or bring a few bits and swap them with other like minded folk – one woman’s “so last season” could be another’s “just what I was looking for to go with that blouse/trousers/skirt”…..

Givenchy AW11

Someone bring some Givenchy to swap with me?!

There will also be an array of local clothes and accessories designers showcasing their work on the night, if you do feel like having a bit of a splurge on something that you won’t find on every second bird you pass on the street (also known as highstreet syndrome*). I will be showcasing some of my new work, so it will be an exclusive preview, I was putting the finishing touches last night and I have to say I am really pleased with my new capsule collection! It’s a small edit of casual dresses, tanks and tshirts in beautiful silks. Pictures to follow!

Givenchy AW11

seriously though, can we talk about this for a little minute….the cat hats…the prints…swoon

Apart from being involved, I cannot recommend this event highly enough. Money is tight for everyone, and events like these really prove that you don’t need to spend loads to have a great wardrobe – a fresh pair of eyes can be just what you need to take what you already have into the new season feeling confident and happy.

Did I mention that there is going to be cupcakes?

*It’s actually not know as that, I just made it up right now. Catchy, no?

Givenchy AW11

so just to reiterate, if you have some unwanted Givenchy, come on Sunday and give it to me. thanks

I wish it were summer

My blog challenge fell by the wayside after about two weeks, as most of the things on the list were just not my style. But the notion of summer clothes and got me thinking – what is my summer wardrobe? Do I even have one?

In September, like many other fashion nerds, I dutifully went through the catwalk shows, noting styles I might like to sport come springtime. This is noteworthy because I went through my Spring-Summer 11 file earlier, and found that many of the styles I lusted for back in September bear no correlation to what I am wearing now. Three collections (pre-fall, fall and resort) have since swanned down the runways, meaning that naturally, I have become excited with new shapes and colours.

The pace of fashion is a really topical issue at the moment, and the rate high street knocks out new styles has received not inches but miles of coverage in the media. Whether it’s a good or bad thing is for another day, but we are creatures who value novelty. A constant need for newness is what drives innovation and stops us from getting stale, a willingness to embrace newness is what keeps us relevant and connected with society. These are both good things.

But does that then mean what we call the Spring Summer collections are intended to be absorbed, digested and excreted before spring has even sprung? A 6 month lag time would make even the most patient person bored. And with the speed of the high street turnaround, designers really can’t afford to take that long in production. It’s not really for me to say how to reorganise fashion weeks, but there is clearly something amiss.

With all that in mind then, I looked back at the trends from September’s shows to see what I still dig, and a few things that I really do not.

Chloe SS11

Still can’t get enough nude tones. Although I wear midi skirts (and knife pleats) less than anticipated; same with leather tops. Although it’s not for a change in taste, just can’t seem to find the right ones.

Viktor & Rolf SS11

If anything, my appetite for shirts has only grown since September. I have a ridiculous number of them, although none as awesome as this Viktor & Rolf number. Sheer is another trend I have thoroughly embraced, and going back to work in American Apparel is feeding that addiction at a dangerous rate!

Rebecca Minkoff SS11

Cigarette pants, cut-out shoes, big necklaces. Check. Mustard, check. However, this does not feel fresh or exciting anymore, it’s more like a go-to utilitarian look.

Jil Sander SS11

Forals & Maxis. Despite making both a massive part of my final collection in college, I am wearing both…well, not really at all…I really love the look, and this Jil Sander dress is AMAZING, but somehow I can’t find a way to fit maximal print into my wardrobe. Having said that I have a few ideas to translate my prints into more wearable garments, so stay tuned to see how I make this happen!!!

Marc by Marc Jacobs SS11

STRIPES! Ms. Prada totally ruled on the stripe front for Spring Summer 11, but I love this outfit, as it has a ’70′s theme that I am starting to embrace (I tried on a floppy hat in work the other day and I can’t stop thinking about it…). Also, I want that hair….

Costume National SS11

So this is basically what I want to look like almost all the time. All, like, designer-y and shizzz… “Black-out summer” was one of my trend folder titles for this summer – I am a demon for black on black, so it’s like they made this one for me!

Givenchy SS11

Looking like a goth is cool right? Chiffon everything to soften the look, and I really want to unpick the sleeves of one of my blazers.

Dries Van Noten SS11

And I still want a Dave Byrne-esque blazer! I love the way it has a louche line, with the lapels coming right the way down.

3.1 Philip Lim SS11

This colour palette is still going strong for me, and shorts are proving a perennial favourite. Neutrals and black and blue are like the subtle girl’s guide to colour blocking!

Moschino SS11

And finally, my old trusty favourite, mom jeans! Teamed with leather jacket. It’s as if Rossella Jardini saw me on the street or something…I kid, I kid.

Holly Fulton SS11

And finally, these pants are in the still-not-wearing category. As with the full-on floral thing, I like them, I just don’t have the balls to wear them. Although I think print and wide legged trousers are here for the next while, and I’ll be in London soon, so watch this space!

Can I Have It?

Today’s challenge of “an outfit you wish you had” ties nicely in with my desire to share my thoughts on the Resort 2012 collections. I really enjoyed looking through all the collections, as I felt like recently despite being totally immersed in the creation of fashion things, that I was totally divorced from what was going on outside my little bubble. So, since I last checked, I realise that I have developed a penchant for massive trousers, and more print than usual. I still like shirts, although I could have told you anyway, seeing as I bought three of them the other day…So here are the outfits I wish I had from the latest collections…

3.1 Philip Lim Resort 2012

Alexander Wang Resort 2012

Celine Resort 2012

Celine Resort 2012

Chloe Resort 2012

Erdem Resort 2012

Givenchy Resort 2012

Jason Wu Resort 2012

J Mendel Resort 2012

Jonathan Saunders Resort 2012

Preen Resort 2012

Proenza Schouler Resort 2012

It’s quite a varied selection, granted, but I think the overall feel is a sort of relaxed glamour, luxe sportswear, classic shapes with a twist. I am continuing my love affair with shirts in all variations. Leather and print feature heavily in my favourites, although I don’t think it’s indicative of the general mood of the season, but rather my own preferences. If I was severely loaded…I think I’ll play the lotto tomorrow…

Are you getting Shirty with me??

Shirts are so now. I could tell you all about how much I love them, but you don’t care, do you. No, no you don’t. Let’s look at some nice examples of shirts then shall we? Good.

3.1 Philip Lim

Sheer, nude. Possibly made of a plastic….I’m in love…..Let’s be honest, this whole outfit is pretty unreal. Lazer cut shorts. yes please. amazing shoes. sure why not….

Jason Wu

Loving the tiny collar. And the black seam in the middle….actually, what’s the technical term for that seam on a shirt…I’m willing to bet that there is a technical term for it….

Proenza Schouler

The texture. The buttons. The shape. Dream.

Thakoon

Loving the devoré (process that burns away fabric). Although it could be ribbon appliquéd on either….And the shape. Delish. Perfect summer fun shirt.

Jonathan Saunders

I really loved Jonathan Saunders’ SS11 collection. The shirts are great….see what he did here to stop the skirt being too pretty pretty….and the skirt makes the shirt less dykey dykey.

Paul Smith

Classic preppy androgynous chic here. oops, that was buzzword central. but still. it’s true. Very London cool, the stripes are ace.

Peter Som

Sleeveless shirt. And centre parting. If I had my way it would be sliiiightly shorter, and I’d wear it with a pair of shorts. I actually have two sleeveless shirts from American Apparel that I’m looking forward to breaking out for the summer…

Preen

Again, I’m loving the texture, and also the turned up hems.

Rag & Bone

Sheer. Sublime Colour. Teamed with amazing shorts and killer shoes. Divine.

Givenchy

Teddy boy. On a girl. Rock. It.

Givenchy

Givenchy again. Sheer. Print. So so so good!

Rebecca Minkoff

Classic city chic. Perfect summer look. Also the pants. Oh, the pants.

Viktor & Rolf

Love this look. Long shirt through the shorts….And sheer. And stripey. Vavavoom!

Viktor & Rolf

This is possibly one of my favourites! Look at it. Just. Look.

Oscar the Grouch

The Oscars were last night. I don’t really have strong feelings on this. But I did look at the dresses. Overall I was seriously underwhelmed by what I saw, and as per usual I didn’t have a breeze who have the birds in the dresses were (I’m shit at pop culture). Here are some lovely ones….

Dior

Sharon Stone looking FIERCE in Dior. Galliano is in a bit of hot water at the moment, what with all those allegations roaming around….but this dress is amazing, in a cruella de ville meets red carpet kind of way.

Givenchy

I LOVE what Ricardo Tisci is doing at the moment, and I am so glad that someone wore such an amaaaazing dress on Oscar night. It’s just so beautiful!

Gucci

Gucci = glamour. Oscars = glamour. Gucci = Oscars. See, I know fashion AND maths.

L'wren Scott

aka Mick Jagger’s missus’ dresses. Though to be fair she deserves recognition for being a good designer, not just a rock star’s bird. I either don’t like the neckline on this or I don’t like the neckline with the necklace….I think I don’t like the necklace. I think she should just have worn a bracelet or something instead. Because I think it’s a rocking dress.

Marchesa

Marchesa. That’s all I really need to say about that. swoon.

Monique Lhullier

I think this is a really great dress. Also, the internet tells me it’s Mandy Moore in the dress, so I like it even more, because it makes her look not like herself, in a really good way.

Valentino

Valentino. Looks great. In a you-don’t-have-to-get-your-baps-out-to-look-good kind of a way.

It’s my party & I’l cry if I want to

It’s my birthday this week. And while I have absolutely no idea what I would like in real life (with real life budgets), if I were to pretend that all my friends and family were loaded and wanted to lavish me with gifts, here’s what I would like……

I really genuinely want to get a really HUGE necklace a la vivienne tam. They seem to be creeping up everywhere, I think they are pretty amazing, don’t you?

Let’s Turkey Trot

Fashion Week is on right now. And while I am defo going to trawl through all the collections, I’m not going to do it just yet. Nope, I’m going to take my sweet ass time about it. Why? Well, because it’s not even cold enough to put on my giant winter coat yet. And I’m not a fashion buyer. So I don’t really NEED to worry about it. Anyway, with that in mind, here is a collection of this season/last season’s (is AW10 last season already?) prints that I think are great. Most are pretty subtle, adding the right amount of texture and visual interest to your winter wardrobe. Which, if it’s anything like mine, features black black more black, some grey, a touch of denim, a camel coat and more black.

I love the Cynthia Rowley pants; while I normally balk at printed trousers (evoking images of the worst kind of Eurotrash), these ones are just the right amount of fun, and a really gorgeous cut.  I am so obsessed with Erdem and Mary Katranzou at the moment expect separate posts extolling their awesomeness. I also really really like the Wunderkind & Proenza Schouler stuff. Actually, I like it all, so I don’t want to be picking favourites. What’s your favourite?! Oh yea, and the Turkey Trot thing…I have been listening to a lot of Little Eva the past few days, here she is in action.

Swoon.

Givenchy’s Couture collection is delectable. I don’t have an angle, or a clever point to make here, the collection is just STUNNING. If any of my friends happen to win the lotto, please buy me one of those belts…And maybe one of the jackets. But I’d settle for the belt. swoon.
