Oscar the Grouch

The Oscars were last night. I don’t really have strong feelings on this. But I did look at the dresses. Overall I was seriously underwhelmed by what I saw, and as per usual I didn’t have a breeze who have the birds in the dresses were (I’m shit at pop culture). Here are some lovely ones….

Dior

Sharon Stone looking FIERCE in Dior. Galliano is in a bit of hot water at the moment, what with all those allegations roaming around….but this dress is amazing, in a cruella de ville meets red carpet kind of way.

Givenchy

I LOVE what Ricardo Tisci is doing at the moment, and I am so glad that someone wore such an amaaaazing dress on Oscar night. It’s just so beautiful!

Gucci

Gucci = glamour. Oscars = glamour. Gucci = Oscars. See, I know fashion AND maths.

L'wren Scott

aka Mick Jagger’s missus’ dresses. Though to be fair she deserves recognition for being a good designer, not just a rock star’s bird. I either don’t like the neckline on this or I don’t like the neckline with the necklace….I think I don’t like the necklace. I think she should just have worn a bracelet or something instead. Because I think it’s a rocking dress.

Marchesa

Marchesa. That’s all I really need to say about that. swoon.

Monique Lhullier

I think this is a really great dress. Also, the internet tells me it’s Mandy Moore in the dress, so I like it even more, because it makes her look not like herself, in a really good way.

Valentino

Valentino. Looks great. In a you-don’t-have-to-get-your-baps-out-to-look-good kind of a way.

Pour myself a cup of ambition

I have not posted in a week. Which is bold. Sorry. But we’re fine, ok? Let’s just move on.

I love this dress. I bought it last year in New York, and at the time it wasn’t in style at all but it was so beautiful I had to have it. I am very happy that the whole ’70′s thing has kicked in, because this summer it’s going to be a really lovely thing to throw on with a nice pair of sandals or something. And the colour! Nom NOm Nom. In other news as of yesterday I am 60% finished my degree. So there will be celebrations tonight, because we were all to delerious, sleep deprived and just plain dead to do anything yesterday. Woop. Oh, and I got an email from American Apparel to tell me that one of the outfits I shared with you guys was featured on their best of seen and submitted. Which is better than a slap in the face with a wet kipper. Ha!

Lonely Child

Some days I wish I had a sister so I could annoy her into doing shoots with me. Or a flatemate or something. As it stands, if I want to play around with taking photos and stuff, I have to do it myself. I guess that’s fine tho, right?! Cindy Sherman‘s work is mostly self-portraits, and she’s really cool. [note: I do not think i am anywhere near as deadly as Cindy Sherman. She's unreal] Here’s what I wore the other day. It’s nice and comfy, with a bit of lace, and a ridiculous bow for good measure. I finally submitted my thesis, so it was time to get krunk. Although drinking for the first time after a month of working like a bitch on college work = SORE head next day!

And I suppose if I had sisters they would take my clothes…

I need to stop thinking about an impossible eventuality.

I’m getting my hair did.

Summer is a funny concept in Ireland. Mostly because our mid year months are much the same as the ones on either side of them – rainy. And not that warm. Nonetheless, we do our best to embrace summer styles as best we can, even if we have about two days that are warm enough to actually wear them. One of this summers brightest trends, literally, is WHITE. It’s fresh, clean, modern, pure, bold….oh it has lots of meanings. It’s also a very daring statement when worn on its own, or in less than sunny weather (don’t wear white after Labour Day). I am also currently in the hairdressers getting my hair back to white. so there.

Having said that, this season’s crop of white looks amazing. While it’s not really neutral, it makes a nice change from all the beige around. And you can always mix in some tan leather to add some colour in a modern minimal way. Or black, for a monochrome look.

Here are my favourite Daz whiter than white looks of Spring Summer 2011.  You’ll notice some of my other favourite SS11 trends, such as lace, sheer (chiffons, tulles, and seriously burnt out devoré abound this season), and shirts! I think I’ll probably do a post on shirts later….

So I’m back to the velvet underground

Stevie Nicks. I love her. She seems like a total nutjob, but that makes her even better?? I mention this (again, I’ve already paid homage to her on this blog) because I recently saw this skirt in Oxfam. And it’s nuts. But I had to have it. It’s actually properly revolting, in a victorian governess kind of way. But it’s VELVET. And it has FRINGING. And it’s a really nice blue. Velvet. With Fringing. Mine.

So, I now own probably the ugliest skirt in the world. I’ve no idea when it was made, the tag is really old looking, and it’s really good quality, so I’m guessing it’s been around for a while. Seriously though, why did I buy a skirt that positively roars “SCARY SPINSTER LADY” to the outside world? To me, it’s all Fleetwood Mac and gypsy chic, but really, it’s a crazy lady skirt. Fuck it tho, it’s unreal.

So what did we learn today? Team ugly skirts with slightly slutty tops, and stick a scarf in your hair to turn Victorian Governess into Gypsy Chic. ish. Ha!

Bout time…

So last September I decided to ignore the SS11 shows, because it was Autumn and there was Winter on the way and I didn’t feel like looking at Summer things. But now it’s fashion week time again. Talk about missing the boat. Anyway, in the spirit of doing things arseways, here’s one of my favourite colour trends for Spring Summer 2011. I’m digging the new neutrals, heading towards reddy orangey earth tones. And blue is basically my favourite colour so I’m happy as larry.

I wanna be Jeurgen Teller

So the other day I wore this. I got the trousers in Zara on sale for like 8euro or something equally ridiculous. Gotta love the end of sale reductions in that shop! I also love that they are khaki green, and I plan on wearing them extensively this spring, with neutrals and silly bright colours, because khaki is a delicious compliment to acid brights, it tempers them so you don’t look like a nu-rave throwback. Coz that’s totes over like.

I’ve been doing lots of photography for college work, and playing around with shutter speeds and flash and whatnot, so I decided to do a bit of that when I was taking these photographs. I have to say, despite me being in the pics, I am pretty happy with the results. I love Jeurgen Teller’s photography, the overly bright flash and yellow tinge, the unusual composition and the kind of voyeristic feel. And Terry Richardson’s hi-flash look, along with the kind of brashness that comes through in his work. So I tried to incorporate a little bit of that into these. I like the way that style lends itself to very amateur work, ha! I think from now on, I’l probably try to do something a little bit more unusual with outfit posts, as I’m not 100% comfortable in front of the camera. These photos where I was more photographer than subject were a lot more fun, and I think they look better than any of the ropey self-timed pics I’v posted previously. But I guess you will be the judge of that.

The other day, I wore this….

We will shortly resume normal procrastination…

Do you care that I am too busy to procrastinate (much)? Probably not. But I am. ish. I am on lockdown til the end of the month, which means that I am starting to climb the walls. So I started a Lookbook. I don’t know how I feel about it, but I did it anyway. My justification is that I am doing my thesis on blogs and user generated (fashion) content, so it’s like research. Lookbook is weird. It should be called areyouprettyandisyourfriendagoodphotographerwithphotoshopbook, because often the clothes are (how do i put this nicely…) not noteworthy. But i suppose lookbook has a better ring to it.

Also, Lookbook seem to hate wordpress because they have badges for blogger and not for us. Samsies with google connect, which is really annoying. So if you want to laugh at my lack of prettiness and good photographer friends with photoshop, here is my lookbook. If you ever see me posting something with long grass and hedgerow, feel free to track me down and slap me! Seriously. No offence to people who do it, but I mean, I live in the city. Where there are buildings, and streets, and lawnmowers.

This is what I look like almost all of the time at the moment. This is the print studio I spend almost all of my time in. It is very warm, so we don’t need jumpers. And it’s messy, so we don’t need clothes that will get wrecked.

I think I’m going to die my hair red.

Resolutions 2.0

Before I forget, the Irish blog awards 2011 are open for nominations. So, if you have a favourite Irish blog, click HERE and vote for it. You don’t have to be in Ireland, or from Ireland, just a reader of an Irish blog. I have a section of Irish bloggers on the right sidebar,if you wanna check some of them out. There are popculture, lifestyle (*fashion & beauty blogs are part of this one*), and arts/culture, so I highly recommend that you shout out your favourites and give them the props that you feel they deserve. Oh, and you only have to do it once, and you don’t have to sign up to anything or agree for facebook gremlins to know what you had for breakfast!

Anyway, this year I resolved to start a photodiary. It’s a fairly straightforward resolution, but true to resolution form, I’ve been shocking bad at keeping it. Here are a few examples of things I have seen this month, I have put the rest of them on my Tumblr (click there). Also, normal programming will resume when I have finished my thesis (next week). It is currently sucking the life out of me, as well as rendering me incapable of speaking or thinking in any sort of coherent way. Soz.xxx

*****oops, i almost forgot, this shit is the funniest thing i have seen in AGES.
