Somewhere over the rainbow it’s winter again

Just had a quick peek at the Marc Jacobs Autumn Winter 2010 show, you can too if you like…

There were a couple of things I noticed……

1. Mid calf skirts

(image: Style.com)

While I am loving the socks and mary-janes combo, the gorgeous blush colour and super-cute bow embroidery, I am very nervous about this mid-calf business. Only the skinniest of legs can pull this length off. The show seemed to have a Mary Poppins quality to it…

2. Galliano Much?

(image: Style.com)
Again, I do love this jacket, but it seems to take much inspiration from Galliano. I also noticed a very similar offering over at Halston…

Can we spot a trend?

3. The fisherman jumper

(image: style.com)

I’m actually delighted about this. I love fisherman jumpers. Very much a case of absorbing street style, coz these babies have been cropping up everywhere recently.

Leaving aside the Mary Poppins buzz (see below), MJ’s offering was a delightful combination of whimsical dresses and smart workwear. No surprises why he is such a popular designer.

Hasbags

I have an amazing bag sitting in the back of my wardrobe. I never use it. I am leaving it there, waiting. It is a former It Bag, past its glory days of fashion caché, and yet some years too young to be a vintage classic. I sometimes feel sorry for it, the poor has-been.

I sort of feel sorry for all the has-been bags…

and the paddingtons.

The Lady Dior has had a bit of a resergence and the Balenciaga lariat has never really gone out of style since it launched (I still want one).

I also still want a mulberry, but not the alexa cheung one (i know, blasphemy) – but the original beautiful one, the roxanne.

In the eternal quest for the new and the now, we discard the just-was. Well, until it has sat in the back of our wardrobes for long enough that it is fresh and exciting again. Which, in general fashion cycle terms, is between ten and twenty years. Oh, and if you havnt already, start hoarding anything early-to-mid 90′s now. The twenty year anniversary is upon us, and is starting to hit runways again. So by that maths, my saddle bag will be making its next outing in…2016, ish…

Mundy???

Remember when Mundy was great? I do.

I remember knowing this song before I knew who Mundy was, and I’v always thought it was amazing. I would need another post to go into the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack, another again for the actual film, and another one still for Baz Luhrmann. Maybe I think this song is so good because of the connections it has to other greatness. They started playing it in work the other day and I was very happy.

Thinks it’s fantastic, it’s made out of plastic

I LOVE Holgas. Love Love Love them. Now, I’m not great at taking pictures on them – yet. But I love the fact that they are shitty pieces of plastic that started off as a cheap-as-chips camera. I love that they are so unmodern. I love that they take amazingly unpredictable photos that have light bleeds and amazing colours. They are tacky as anything, it’s great. Actually, thinking about it, I really need to use mine more. I must remember to bring it to New York. Where I’m going, in 10 days (eh, so excited!!!). Here are some of my current attempts.

Cali Select Shots

On Tuesday, Julie and I went into work to take pics of some of the vintage stuff in the store. It was a lot of fun combining some of my favourite things – friends, cameras, styling, and a hint of sunshine. Here are some of the results.

Hope you like them!

Skinny Minnie

Minny Mouse meets prim 60′s housewife seems to have been Lagerfeld’s inspiration for the styling of his Spring couture show. Or was it supposed to be heart-shaped coiffures? Either way, I want to grow my hair long again so I can pile it on top of my hair and put a rosette in the middle. Oh, and the clothes are alright too… ;)

Jump onboard

I would do bold things to the guitarist in this band….

Actually, I was just gonna post this on its own, but the pool in the video reminds me of McQueens summer collection…

All I Have to do is Dream

Sometimes I don’t want WEARABLE. Sometimes every girl wants to clothe themselves in an outfit that is awkward, in which it is difficult to stand/sit/pee/eat/generally do anything in. And in my dream land, for these occasions, Elie Saab invites me to his atelier and lets me loose to choose one of his dresses. From the look of his Couture collections, one gets the impression a whole host of big-deal celebrities & actors (i’m not talking about i’m a celebrity… celebrities) look to him for exactly the same thing when it comes to Oscars/Emmys/Grammys/SAGs/Hags/envelope opening.

(photos: Style.com)

The first gown screams Nicole Kidman at the Oscars. And if not that exact one then one of the other similar ones from his most recent couture show! I also really liked the soft and delicious print of the second gown, if not so much the fairly standard-GOWN construction.

Of course, he doesn’t just do GOWNS (seriously, i love saying that word…). He also does amazing cocktail dresses, and I think this is possibly his really strong point. While Galliano and McQueen kick ass at drama and glamour and creations in millions of metres of the finest silks (actually, I’m gonna have to add Vicktor & Rolf into that list after their last show…wowzer!), I think Elie Saab is at his strongest creating flirty looks that ooze luxe.

(photos: Style.com)

He is every bit as glamourous and refined and the clothes are as exquisite, and I adore his use of texture and embellishment. I think the reason I love Elie Saab so much is that he makes dresses that girls adore, that boys are not afraid of. I’ve spent enough time wearing beautiful things at the expense of intimidating, confusing or just plain scaring men to spot a happy medium – an exquisite dress that a woman feels amazing in, but when a guy looks at you he somehow doesnt even see it. aaah if only every dress was like that!!

Finally, two yummy looks from Saab’s RTW collection for Spring 2010.

Exciting!!

When news that Sonia Rykiel was collaborating with H&M first hit, I was very excited. The subsequent lingerie line was delightful, but sadly, not the Sonia Rykiel knitwear we all hoped for. Well, this time around, it’s exactly that. Launching on February 20th (so soon!), Sonia’s collection is right on the money. I actually cannot wait!
